USDA National Organic Program

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) launched a campaign to ensure rigorous standards for "organic" body care at the Natural Products Expo West, March 6-9, 2003. Currently, various body care companies and interests are looking to gut the organic standards for body care so as to make them meaningless, pressuring the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) to codify or implement extremely weak watered-down standards.

On May 3, 2003 the OCA filed a formal complaint with the California State Organic Program, regarding misleading labeling techniques. As they expected, the State of California has now reported that this issue would better be addressed by the National Organic Program (NOP). The OCA will be filing a formal complaint to the NOP in September 2003. In the meantime, the Coming Clean Campaign is predominantly a public education campaign, with informative ads in publications like Mother Jones and Utne Reader.

They maintain a list that now has over 300 names of companies that are committed to meeting the standards of truly natural products. Support these companies and protect your rights to truthful product labeling and consumer information.

Visit the Organic Consumers website (link), and learn more about what is and isn't considered a natural and organic product.
